Some elements of this text to consider:

  • The idea that Santa gives naughty children coal instead of presents is the basis for this cartoon.
  • The north pole has been reduced to one piece of ice. It is implied that this is result of global warming due to the effects of coal. The small piece of ice falling off the left hand side highlights the continuing effects of global warming.
  • The cartoon contains elements of dark humor as well as tragedy.
  • The use of white / blue in the foreground contrasts with the brown / gray (i.e. polluted) tones in the background.
