Some elements of this text to consider:

  • This text is fairly brief and does not include many details on the incident. Some real paper 1 texts have so much discuss that students have to spend a fair amount of time at the start deciding what to write about and what to pass on. There have been past paper 1 texts, like this one, that are a bit more sparse and the challenge is to find enough to write about.
  • The text includes a video clip of the incident which does seem quite important under the circumstance. The video clip does, however, blur out the faces of the people involved. Some other news websites that cover the incident might only blur the face of the young man who was the victim of the alleged misconduct while other websites might not blur any of the faces
  • The paragraph length is very short which is a common feature of new articles. There are some new articles, however, that provide more in-depth reporting on an incident to a different kind of audience that have longer paragraphs and the sentences have more complex structures (e.g. dependent clauses, use of semi-colons etc.)
  • The new article includes statements from the police force which are clearly critical of the officer’s behaviour.
