IB DP Language A Language and Literature -sample text analysis – letter from a politician

Text:John Cummins. On behalf of the citizens of Delta -Richmond East. 2008

Before you read the “spoiler” bullet points below take a careful look at the text. Imagine it is a text you are using for your DP Language A Language and Literature assessments: the individual oral, the HL essay, or Paper 1 and analyze it accordingly. (This text would not be appropriate for Paper 2).

Some elements of the text to consider:

  • This ad is a public letter from a politician to a visiting artistic group. There are complex politics involved considering that the group has links to the Falun Dafa, which is a group that has been targeted by the Chinese government. (FYI the lower mainland area of BC has a significant Chinese diaspora).
  • The elements of the letter which communicate that Cummins is a member of parliament and helps the audience contact him
  • The inclusion of a portrait photo
  • The style of the writing
  • The content of the letter which steers clear of any discussion of the deeper political issues
